As we journey into this Advent season, we've decided to offer a poetic challenge of sorts: we're asking students, alumni, friends, and really whoever is interested to submit a haiku or two that are centered around the themes and stories of Advent.
In its most reduced form, a haiku is a Japanese poem that contains 17 syllables, which in English are broken into a simple and symmetric three-line pattern, with the syllables grouped as 5-7-5.
For example:
Heavenly Father
Hear the prayer of our hearts
And grant us your peace
(taken from here)
There are variations of the haiku that are out there as well, and feel free to explore them. We just hope this can give you a creative exercise through which to poetically explore the tension of celebration and anticipation within the story of Advent.
